Students will study and interpret texts from contemporary and historical periods, including plays, short stories, and short essays, and will investigate and create media works. This course emphasizes continued student improvement in literacy fundamentals. Students will study plays, short stories, poems and novels using literature as a focus for written and oral expression. Moreover, students will explore media works, especially the newspaper. An important focus will be reading comprehension and development.

In this course, students focus on extending their literacy and communication skills to prepare for success in their daily lives, in the workplace, in the English, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation course, or in the English: Contemporary Aboriginal Voices, Grade 11, Workplace Preparation course. The course is organized by strands that extend listening and talking skills, reading and viewing skills, and writing skills. In all strands, the focus is on refining foundational literacy skills and on using language clearly and accurately in a variety of authentic contexts. Students build on their strategies and engage in the processes involved in talking, listening, reading, viewing, writing, and thinking. Students reflect regularly upon their growth in these areas.

Contemporary Aboriginal Voices, (NBE3C) Grade 11 College Preparation

This course emphasizes the development of literacy,critical thinking,and communication skills through the study of works in English by Aboriginal writers. Students will study the content, form,and style of informational texts and literary and media works,and will develop an appreciation of the wealth and complexity of Aboriginal writing. Students will also write reports,correspondence,and persuasive essays,and analyse the relationship between media forms and audiences.An important focus will be on establishing appropriate voice and using business and technical language with precision and clarity.

This course emphasizes the strengthening of essential reading and writing skills. Students will read short plays, short stories, novels, poems and newspaper and magazine articles and opinion supporting details, extending personal knowledge, responding imaginatively, and using specific strategies to expand vocabulary. An important focus will be on writing clear, accurate, and coherent narratives, summaries, reports, letters, and short essays, using correct grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

ENGLISH – Grade 12 College Preparation

This course emphasizes consolidation of literacy, critical thinking, and communication skills. Students will analyse informational texts and literary works from various time periods, countries, and cultures; write research reports, summaries, and short analytical essays; complete an independent study project; and analyse the interactions among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be one establishing appropriate style and using business and technical language effectively.

Students will study informational texts and literature from various countries and cultures; write summaries, reports, resumes, and short essays; complete an independent research project; and explain the connections among media forms, audiences, and media industry practices. An important focus will be using specialized language related to the workplace accurately and coherently in appropriate contexts.

ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL LITERACY COURSE – Grade 12 - Open

OLC4O

This course is designed to help students acquire and demonstrate the cross-curricular literacy skills that are evaluated by the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Students who complete the course successfully will meet the provincial literacy requirement for graduation. Students will read a variety of informational, narrative, and graphic texts and will produce a variety of forms of writing, including summaries, information paragraphs, opinion pieces, and news reports. Students will also maintain and manage a literacy portfolio containing a record of their reading experiences and samples of their writing.

Eligibility: Students who have been eligible to write the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) at least twice, and have been unsuccessful at least once, are eligible to take this course to achieve both a grade 12 credit and their literacy credential for graduation.

THE WRITER’S CRAFT – Grade 12 College Preparation

This course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to the craft of writing. Students will analyse models of effective writing; use a workshop approach to produce a range of works; identify and use technologies required for specialized forms of writing; and identify effective ways to improve the quality of their writing. They will also complete a major paper as part of a creative or analytical independent study project and investigate opportunities for publication and for writing careers.
