This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials through working with a range of materials, processes, techniques and styles.

Visual Arts, Grade 10 (Open)

This course emphasizes learning through practice; building on what students know; and introducing them to new ideas, materials, and processes for parts of the world.

This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill using band instruments (flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, bass & percussion). The overall aim is to develop technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use.

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill (using band instruments). Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history.

Media Arts, Grade 10

This course enables students to create media art works by exploring new media, emerging technologies such as digital animation, and a variety of traditional art forms such as film, photography, video, and visual arts. Students will acquire communications skills that are transferable beyond the media arts classroom and develop the skills necessary to create and interpret media art works.

Acoustic Guitar, Grade 11 Open

This is an introductory course for acoustic guitar enthusiasts. No prior guitar knowledge is required. Students must supply their own acoustic guitar. Students will concentrate on developing good posture, sound and technique through a variety of musical genres.

This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis, and performance of various kinds of music, including baroque and classical music, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music. Students will perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, complete detailed creative activities, and analyze and evaluate live and recorded performances. They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music while developing their technical and imaginative abilities.

Media Arts, Grade 11

Media Arts, Grade 10, Open

This course focuses on the development of media arts skills through the production of art works involving traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as new media, computer, computer animation, and web environments. Students will explore the evolution of media art works, critically analyze the unique characteristics of this art form. Students will examine the role of media artists in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture and values.

This course focuses on studio activities in one or more of the visual arts. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter, and will evaluate art works, providing grounds for their aesthetic judgements. They will also examine historical and cultural contexts of Western art (including Canadian art) and art from various world cultures to support their study of specific media.

Students will concentrate on developing interpretative skills and the ability to work independently. They will also complete complex creative projects.

Media Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preperation

This course emphasizes the refinement of media arts skills through the creation of a thematic body of work by applying traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as multimedia, computer animation, installation art, and performance art. Students will develop works that express their views on contemporary issues and will create portfolios suitable for use in either career or post-secondary education applications. Students will critically analyze the role of media arts in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture, and community values.

Visual Arts, Grade 11, University/College Preparation or Open

This course focuses on the refinement of students’ skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will analyse art forms; use theories of art in analysing and producing art; and increase their understanding of stylistic changes in modern and contemporary Western art, Canadian (including Native Canadian) art, and art forms from various parts of the world. Students will produce a body of work demonstrating a personal approach. If students wish to concentrate their study in a specific media, individualized courses in drawing (AWL 4M1), painting (AWN 4M1) or non-traditional media (AWT 4M1), will be made available.
