American History, Grade 11 University
This course follows U.S. History from the very beginning right up to President Obama. Students will examine the role of significant individuals such as Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King and events like the American Revolution, Slavery, The Civil War and the terrorist attack of September 11th, 2001. A guiding question in the course is how the U.S developed from 13 separate colonies under British control to the greatest superpower in the history of the world in barely 200 years.
Travel and Tourism, Grade 11 Open
This course examines travel and tourism as vehicles for learning about selected parts of the world. Students will become familiar with the unique characteristics of selected tourist destinations in a variety of world settings. The class will look at the impact that the travel industry has on different tourist destinations throughout the world as well as the cultural and political factors that influence the amount of tourism that an area receives.
Understanding Canadian Law, Grade 11 University / College
This course examines Canada’s legal system, with an emphasis on the impact that our laws have on our everyday lives. We will study criminal law in order to find out what our rights and responsibilities are under the law and follow cases as they proceed through the courts and the criminal justice system. Civil law will identify the way Canadians proceed against one another directly with law suits in cases other than criminal and a comparison will be drawn between our laws and those of other counties.
World History to the Sixteenth Century, Grade 11 University / College
This course traces human history from the origins of primitive man up to the sixteenth century. Emphasis will be on the development of key civilizations of ancient history, such as those of the Ancient Near East, Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire and others around the world. A guiding focus will be how these political, cultural, economic and historical forces have come to shape the modern world as we know it today.
Canadian and International Law, Grade 12 University
This course examines both Canadian and International Law in a global context. We will study the historical framework of various laws and their philosophical principles and origins. Issues encountered in international law will be examined for their application to issues in Canadian society while Canadian law will be held up to the scrutiny of the international community. Students will critically analyze case studies and communicate their findings in a variety of ways.
Canadian and World Issues, Grade 12 University
This course examines the challenges of living in the world today while trying to create a future that is both sustainable and equitable. Students will investigate a variety of current issues in the world and attempt to understand how we can meet the human needs of as many people as possible while repairing and protecting the natural environment. We will search for a balance between addressing the complex issues which face Canada and an increasingly interdependent world that is rapidly changing.
World History: The West and the World, Grade 12 University
This course begins with the artistic revolution of the Renaissance and religious revolt against the Catholic Church in the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century, as Europe becomes the dominant power of the world. Political revolutions follow, with massive political, social and economic changes in England, the United States, France, Russia and China, while the scientific revolutions of Galileo, Newton, Darwin and Einstein advance technology like never before. We will also compare the development of the West with the emergence of several other regions of the world, such as Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
